Head coach Timo Schultz and his players were happy to come away with a point after the scoreless draw at Karlsruher SC. Here's the post-match reaction.
Timo Schultz: "The draw was a fair reflection. Both teams battled well. There's not a lot to say about the game itself. Both sides carved out two or three chances. Those chances were defused brilliantly by the keepers, so we can draw a line under the game very quickly. We take a deserved point back to Hamburg. We keep talking about development and the quantity and the quality of the chances our opponents are creating has gone down since the winter. The whole team can take credit for that. Even though I can't really be satisfied with the performance, it's the attitude shown by the players in their response to all kinds of situations that's important. We kept trying to go forward and create something, which is really positive. Finn Ole Becker had a thigh problem and Philipp Ziereis was feeling fatigued after all the games recently, so both stayed in Hamburg."
Daniel-Kofi Kyereh: "It was a typical goalless draw. We gave hardly anything away at the back but didn't perform well going forward. We knew we couldn't take the game lightly after all the euphoria of the last few days. We were focused from the outset, as you saw. We have a point now and that's better than losing."
Guido Burgstaller: "The draw was a fair result. We obviously wanted more than we eventually produced on the pitch today but that's football. Ultimately, we kept our shape and defended well. We're always awkward to play against, even though we didn't make the most of our opportunities on the break today. Our focus is now on next week's game."
Christian Eichner (Karlsruher SC): "We prepared very intensively for St. Pauli. They've been getting better and better over the last few months. We saw evidence on Monday of the kind of high-intensity game we were facing, so we were very keen to get back quickly to support our last line of defence whenever we lost the ball. We did that superbly well. Our attacking play was a little untidy, especially in the first half. The second half was better. I felt we were the likelier side without ever really threatening. The draw is a just outcome."
Jerome Gondorf (Karlsruher SC): "I agree the draw was a fair result. We had no clear-cut opportunities in the first half but were more compelling in the second. It wasn't to be today, but it was important we were able to tame St. Pauli's attack and keep a clean sheet."
