VICTORY IN THREE ACTS: BOYS IN BROWN OVERCOME WERDER

FC St. Pauli emerged victorious from the three-part friendly at SV Werder Bremen on Friday afternoon, Simon Makienok, Lukas Daschner, Borys Tashchy and Igor Matanovic getting the goals for the Boys in Brown in a 4-2 win played out over three 35-minute periods. Bremen twice reduced the deficit through a Christian Viet own goal and a solo effort from Abedenego Nankishi but were unable to ward off the defeat.
It was clear from the outset that the Timo Schultz’s side were out to show a reaction to the 3-0 defeat against Karlsruhe. While Bremen enjoyed more control in the early stages, it was the Boys in Brown who carried the greater goal threat. With eight minutes gone, Finn Ole Becker chipped the ball to Maximilian Dittgen, who took the ball round Werder keeper Stefanos Kapino, only to be flagged offside. The ball did find the net seven minutes later, however, when Luca Zander, playing on his old stomping ground, delivered a low ball into the box for Simon Makienok to net from close range with an exquisite backheel.
The Boys in Brown seized the initiative and squandered a number of opportunities to add a second goal. Initially, the final ball was lacking, and then livewire Max Dittgen hit the side netting. Kevin Möhwald tested Svend Brodersen at the other end, but the FCSP keeper was equal to the task. The home side threatened again just before the end of the first period when Yuya Osako did brilliantly to turn Afeez Aremu, only to drag his shot off target.
Werder again made the better start after the restart, Milot Rashica going close in the 39th minute. But as in the first period, the goal came at the other end. Substitute Christian Viet knocked a fine pass over the top to Lukas Daschner, who doubled his side's advantage with a left-foot shot past the keeper. Dittgen almost headed a third moments later, but Kampino tipped the ball over the crossbar. Instead, it was Bremen who got the goal when Viet was unlucky to get in the way of a shot by Nick Woltemade and in so doing divert the ball into his own net. The Boys in Brown produced the perfect response within a minute, however. Marco Friedl brought down Borys Tashchy in the penalty area and the striker got up to convert the spot-kick.
Both coaches rang the changes going into the final third. One of the players introduced was 17-year-old striker Igor Matanovic, who normally runs out for the St. Pauli Under-19s. And it was he who got on the end of a cross from Leart Paqarada to score his first goal on his senior debut with a close-range header. The tempo of the game increased in the closing stages, partly because of all the substitutions made, yet the goalmouth action faded away until the 93rd minute, when Nankishi completed the scoring with a solo run into the box and competent finish. Nevertheless, that strike could not take the shine off a convincing performance overall from Schultz's men.
