St. Pauli sign Guido Burgstaller

FC St. Pauli have increased their attacking options with the addition of Guido Burgstaller. The Austria striker arrives at the Millerntor from Bundesliga outfit FC Schalke 04 and has put pen to paper on a contract until 30 June 2023. The two clubs have agreed not to disclose any details of the transfer.

The 31-year-old moved to Gelsenkirchen in January 2017 and made 119 competitive appearances for the Royal Blues (32 goals, 13 assists). Before that Burgstaller had spent two years in Bundesliga 2 with FC Nürnberg, scoring 34 goals and contributing 12 assists in 70 competitive appearances. He has also played 25 times for Austria (2 goals, 1 assist).

Reaction to the deal:

Director of sport Andreas Bornemann: "With so many players leaving in pre-season, it was clear we wanted to do something in attack. With his experience, which will benefit our young players in particular, and with his quality, Guido Burgstaller is exactly the kind of player we were looking for. And with his style of play, he's a perfect fit for the Millerntor and FC St. Pauli."

Head coach Timo Schultz: "In Guido Burgstaller, we are getting an absolute 'mentality player' who never gives a ball up and spares neither himself nor his opponent. Things hadn't gone so well for him at Schalke recently, but he has proved often enough that he knows where the goal is. The fans can look forward to a player who embodies the classic St. Pauli attributes."

Guido Burgstaller: "I'm looking forward to the new challenge at FC St. Pauli. Throughout my career, it's always been important to me to play for clubs with a certain tradition. It's now time for me to get to know my teammates and the coach's philosophy and then get out on the pitch as soon as possible, of course. I can't wait to hear Hells Bells at the Millerntor."
